My bookshelves are always the first place I look to when I want to give my space a refresh. By swapping out an item here and changing up a vignette there, I am able to completely change the way the entire room looks. Your bookshelves allow you to play with different colors, textures and patterns. Starting to decorate your bookshelves can be a bit daunting though. But that’s why I’m here! Today I am going to be sharing with you the five elements every bookshelf needs to look amazing.
If you have a bookshelf, you have to have some books to go on it! Books are great standing on their own, leaning against something or giving height to another decor piece. I personally like getting books that have white or cream bindings (who is surprised?). But you can also get books that match the room’s overall color palette! I have found that the best place to get books at for decorating purposes is thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army.
Trays & Bowls
Another must-have when decorating your bookshelves are trays and bowls. Trays are great because they can ground several different objects that would seems like they were floating and disconnected otherwise. You can also lean a tray against the wall like a piece of art! Bowls you can use to hold plants or they can just stand on their own. I personally love stacking a few books and placing a decorative bowl right on top! Here are some trays and bowls I am loving!
Every bookshelf should have some life in it (or maybe some faux life for those of you that don’t have a green thumb)! Plants are always apart of my bookshelf decor. You can get plants meant for hanging that will cascade down your bookshelf, or small plants to help fill in holes in your bookshelf.
Vases are another key element that every bookshelf should have. They add so much visual interest to a bookshelf because they come in all shapes, sizes and colors! You can put florals or greenery in them for even more height, or let them stand alone. Below are some of my favorite vases out right now!
Baskets, Bins & Boxes
My bookshelves are not only a place to decorate, but also a place to store some of my office supplies. To get some functionality out of your bookshelves I recommend hiding away the not so pretty stuff in baskets, bins or boxes. You can find baskets that go with the style of your bookshelf decor and they will make sure your bookshelves stay clutter-free and beautiful! Here are some decorative baskets, bins and boxes that I love!
I hope you feel like you can conquer decorating your bookshelves after reading this post. Just remember to have fun with it! Play around with decor pieces, step back and look at your bookshelf and adjust from there. Happy decorating! And as always, keep living your style!
